DESCRIPTION

Head out on this 0.9-mile loop trail near Canyon Lake, Texas. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 27 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. There is water on site but winterized during the colder months.

This picture illustrates the entrance to the Creek Trail, the newest trail at the Curry Nature Center. It takes you through the middle of the canyon, beside the creek that flows after a heavy rain. To reach the Creek Trail from the trailhead, go down the main trail to the fork and take the left branch. The Creek Trail entrance is on the right.

At the lower end of the Creek Trail, the creek bed is all stone. These are the rocks the fast flowing water brought down from above that dropped to the bottom when the water slowed down. Note the bed is wider and shallower here.

There are only a few red oak in the Curry Nature Center. This one is well down the Creek Trail and has gone dormant for the winter.

Because the Hill Country is a semi-arid region with long periods of no rain, ferns are rare. But these are about half way down the Creek Trail and are watered by a spring further up the hillside. You can see others along the side of the creek in different areas.

Along the Creek Trail, Comal Trails Alliance members have built berms from deadfall and pruned branches. These berms intercept water flow during heavy rains, slowing it down and reducing erosion.
